A Viking Museum Exhibit Opens: "Vikings - Lives Beyond the Legends"
"Vikings - Lives Beyond the Legends" has opened at The Royal Museum of British Columbia May 16. It is one of 2 new travelling exhibits developed by the Historiska Nationalmuseet, the other is called “We Call Them Vikings”. http://www.vancouverobserver.com/news/discover-real-lives-vikings-royal-bc-museum
The exhibition includes more than 500 artifacts, from exquisite filigree-work jewellery to rune-inscribed swords, from silver embroidered silk fabric to the oldest known crucifix in Sweden.
Museumspartner GmbH says that the exhibition comprises the following thematic sections:
- Meet the Vikings – Myths of the 19th century challenged by archaeological finds
- Family Community: Societal structure and livelihood in Scandinavia in the 8th to 11th centuries
- Homes, Colourful and Bustling: Life on farms, and in villages and towns
- More than Just Worship: Religion, mythology and cosmology
- The Living and the Dead: Funeral rituals and the afterlife
- Norse Craftsmanship: High-quality objects made in the North
- Away on Business: Scandinavians in Europe and beyond. Trade and rampages
- Over the Sea: Seafaring and shipbuilding
- Reconstruction of a Viking ship in original size

The Viking cultural item content and Exhibit Narrative is primarily from the Historiska Nationalmuseet Stockholm (aka The Swedish History Museum). “We Call Them Vikings will initially tour in Europe. Opening in April 2014 at Spain’s Museu Marítim de Barcelona, then to the Gallo-Romeins Museum in Tongeren, Belgium, and Schloss Schallaburg in Austria. " Lives Beyond the Legends" opened in May 2012 at Drents Museum in the Dutch city of Assen and has been shown at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. The exhibition is currently on tour in North America, where it be at:
- the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada, (now)
- The Field Museum in Chicago
- the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa
